Enactus is a student enterprise society that works with students across various universities around the country. Their goal is to spur entrepreneurial action which also has a social dimension – so it helps others. In this blog I explain how my participation in Enactus helped me get started as a Management Trainee at Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
How did I get involved?
I joined the social enterprise society Enactus at the University of Essex. It felt like a good opportunity to get involved in an extracurricular activity that was relevant to my degree, while at the same time exploring different business avenues. As a Sociology and Criminology student, I rarely got the opportunity to engage with the business world and I found Enactus was a great way to understand how businesses work. At the same time it was helping to expand my CV and allowed me to do some effective networking; the work also allowed me to help people less fortunate than myself. I stayed with Enactus because it offered me a fantastic opportunity to work at the heart of an organisation that had clear goals and objectives – to change communities for the better.
Where does Enterprise fit in?
One of the founding values of Enterprise Rent-a-Car is to ‘strengthen our communities’ one neighbourhood at a time’ and to welcome all sorts of people from all walks of life, so the company has a culture that’s very supportive of Enactus and its members – including me! As a sponsoring company, Enterprise Rent-a-Car recognises the hard work and talent of the Enactus network on a global scale and acknowledges the effort each member makes to achieve social change.
How did it help me?
Joining a society helped me find a career at Enterprise Rent-a-Car. The company has the same kind of great integrity I’d found at Enactus and requires the same kind of skills that I’d acquired there. During my time with the society I became much more confident in myself and in my abilities, my public speaking improved and so did my team leadership skills. I find that this experience grows daily while working at Enterprise too.
Joining a society like Enactus may feel like a time-consuming part of university life, but you’ll graduate with the feeling that you’ve achieved so much more. You’ll make lifelong friends, you’ll have improved lives for the better, made more productive use of your free time and developed important skills that will help you after graduation as you move into the world of employment. If you’d like to work for a company that believes in strengthening communities, why not see what opportunities Enterprise Rent-a-Car has on offer right now?
