I grew up with a strong business mind and was always looking for an opportunity in every aspect of life. So through my tertiary education, I studied business-related subjects, including accounting, finance, business studies and economics. Having graduated from university, I wanted to pursue a career in business but I had no idea of where to start. So I spent some time researching the companies that would best help me progress and become a future pioneer.
A friend of mine who had started working at Enterprise Rent-A-Car told me about the exciting opportunities they had there and before I knew it I was being interviewed for a role. When I saw how much thought and preparations they put into the recruitment process, I soon realised that the company was looking for someone who fitted my description.
What I was to learn over the next year as a Management Trainee changed my life. I was exposed to various sides of the business, and I was picking up experiences both consciously and sub-consciously. It also became apparent that this was a unique company that gives the autonomy to run the business all by yourself. Right from the start, I was giving ideas to the team around me, which were then implemented and improved results – and I was achieving all kinds of successes all the way through. With all this hard work and determination, there was only ever going to be one outcome: within 10 months I got my promotion to Assistant Manager!
In my new role, I continued to apply the same practices and ended up making a name for myself in our flagship Preston branch. During my time here I improved the customer service score, grew the business all of which helped towards a healthy operating profit. I consistently developed employees from Trainee to Management Assistant. On a personal level, I managed to achieve the best customer service score in the branch’s history. In addition to this, I played a pivotal role in the BAME focus group meetings, suggesting new ideas and changes to make our company a place that was welcoming to all. Thanks to all this, I got promoted to Branch Manager at the Morecambe branch – within two years of joining the business!
Since I have taken on my Branch Manager position I have had a really strong five months in which the business has improved in all core areas. I think it’s all down to my hunger to succeed. Let’s face it, I never saw myself in the car rental industry when I was younger, but now that I’m here, there’s no place I’d rather be. I use myself as an example to the team, so they can follow similar avenues. Enterprise’s doors are always open, and I fully believe I have been rewarded for my efforts. I will strive to go even further within the company and I’m ready for the next step in my career.
If you too have the drive and determination for a long and successful career, the graduate management trainee scheme could be the right one for you.
